Biographical Information

Jarrad Page was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an outfielder on March 10, 2012, after a six-year career as a defensive back in the National Football League.

Page was drafted three times as a baseball player, first in the 5th round of the 2002 amateur draft out of San Leandro High School by the Milwaukee Brewers, one pick after Donnie Murphy. He did not sign, accepting a scholarship to play football at UCLA. He continued to play baseball there, as a centerfielder, struggling, even though he emerged as a top-notch football player. He hit .233/.324/.358 in 2004 and .149/.202/.198 in 2005. He was drafted twice more, as a junior by the Colorado Rockies in the 32nd round of the 2005 draft, and then after graduation in 2006 by the Anaheim Angels in the 7th round. He was also drafted in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, also in the 7th round.

Even though he was a relatively low draft choice, Page made the Chiefs team as a back-up in 2006 and played in all 16 games, making 3 interceptions. In 2007, he became the team's starting free safety and started all 16 games that year, as well as in 2008. In 2009, he suffered a shoulder injury in the team's 5th game, and then a calf injury during rehabilitation and did not play again that season. The injuries changed the course of his career, as in 2010 he was traded to the New England Patriots and was back to being a back-up, playing 10 games, missing the other 6 with an injury. In 2011, his career continued to slide, as he was benched and then cut by the Philadelphia Eagles after 6 games during which he was a starter. He was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings, finishing the year with 5 games as a little-used back-up, playing mainly on special teams. Overall, he played 74 games in the NFL, 45 as a starter, with 12 interceptions. He never scored a touchdown.

Seeing that his career in pro football was coming to an end, Page decided to attend an open tryout camp put on by the Dodgers in Glendale, AZ in early March, 2012. He impressed scouts enough with his tremendous athletic skills that they signed him as an outfielder, in spite of his relatively advanced age of 27. He made his pro debut that year with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, but after going just 1-for-25 in 8 games, he was released by the club.
