On May 26, 2018, before the start of his next minor league season, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins in return for veteran pitcher Phil Hughes. The Twins had just had Hughes designated for assignment, and needed to add a pick in the supplemental second round of the 2018 amateur draft to sweeten the pot while agreeing to pay almost $15 million of Hughes's remaining salary in order to receive a prospect in return for the pitcher. After the deal, he was slated to join the GCL Twins.
