Biographical information

James McRae played at least one season of minor league ball.

He was a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II where he served in the Pacific Northwest and the Aleutian Islands.

McRae played minor league baseball shortly after returning from the war. In 1946, there are records of him playing for the Thomasville Tigers of the Georgia-Florida League and the Cairo Egyptians of the Kentucky-Illinois-Tennessee League. Both were unaffiliated Class D teams. For Thomasville, James played 31 games, hitting .202 (18 for 89) with seven walks, three doubles and a triple. He fielded just .857 in24 games in the outfield. In Cairo, one of his teammates was former major league pitcher Pep Rambert who saw action during two seasons for the pre-war Pittsburgh Pirates.

Following his baseball career, McRae attended the Atlanta College of Art and later became in instructor there. He had some success as a cartoonist and commercial artist before becoming a painter. He would be a studio artist for nearly 60 years.

Besides having a career in baseball, Jim's other athletic pursuits included amateur boxing and golf. He began playing golf at 60, and was successful locally winning a number of tournaments.

He died at the age of 86 on December 7, 2010 in Asheville, NC after a short illness.
