Biographical Information[edit]

Third baseman James Calleran played minor league baseball from 1927 to 1933, mostly in the International League and 1937-1938, mostly in the Piedmont League. He was then an umpire in the Piedmont League from 1939 to 1942. On July 24, 1939 as Calleran and his fellow umpires were walking off the field in Norfolk, VA, he was hit on the head with a soda bottle thrown by a fan. He was knocked unconcious, and taken to the hospital, where he was treated for a concussion. This led to a "bottle ban" at that ball park; all drinks were subsequently served in paper cups.
