Biographical Information

6' 8" pitcher Jairo Cappellan signed with the Cincinnati Reds as an international amateur free agent in 2017. He began his professional career the following year, with the DSL Reds of the Dominican Summer League, going 2-3, 6.25 in 18 games as a relief pitcher. In 31 2/3 innings, he gave up 26 walks but struck out 39 batters.

Tragically, his first season was his only one as on November 3, 2018 he was killed in a car accident on a highway near Boca Chica. Two teammates with the Reds were also in the vehicle, P Raul Hernandez and OF Emilio Garcia, both also 19, and both were also injured, with Hernandez being described as being in critical condition.
