Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jaden Hill is the younger brother of Kentrell Hill, who spent three years (2011-2013) in the San Francisco Giants chain as on outfielder. The younger Hill brother was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 38th round of the 2018 Amateur Draft after his senior year at Ashdown High School where he was an outstanding two-way player, but he chose not to sign and instead embarked on a three-year collegiate career at Louisiana State University. Unfortunately, all three seasons wound being abbreviated. He missed most of his freshman year with a shoulder injury, his sophomore year occurred during the coronavirus outbreak, and he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow during his seventh start in his junior year on April 2ng, which cost him the rest of the year. Prior to the UCL tear, he was expected to be a top-five pick in the 2021 Amateur Draft, but he had to wait until the eighth pick of the second round to hear his name called, when the Colorado Rockies selected him. He was one of two pitchers the Rockies organization would take in that second round, the other being Joe Rock.
He couldn't begin his professional career until July 2022 because of the torn ligament. He was first assigned to the ACL Rockies along with Rockies' picks from the 2022 Amateur Draft. After seven starts, he was moved up to the Fresno Grizzlies of the Low-A California League, where he made his final three starts of the year. In all, he pitched 17 2/3 innings with no decisions and an ERA of 3.06 as the Rockies were being very careful with him.
He advanced to the Spokane Indians of the Advanced-A Northwest League for the 2023 season. The first half of the season did not go as planned, however. In 26 innings over 10 starts, he allowed 7 home runs, walked 17, hit 4 batters, uncorked 2 wild pitches, and allowed 34 hits. While he did strike out 28 men - more than one per inning - his ERA for the first half was a whopping 10.38. He did a bit better in his last 6 starts, lowering his ERA to 9.48 and finishing with 57 Ks in 43 2/3 innings. He then pitched in the Arizona Fall League after the season, putting up an ERA of 3.18 in an encouraging development.
He took a huge step forward in 2024, finally flashing the talent that had made him a top draft pick. he started the year in AA with the Hartford Yard Goats where he went 5-2, 3.52 in 34 games as a reliever. He moved up to the AAA Albuquerque Isotopes on August 2nd, and while he gave up 8 runs in 7 innings over 7 outings there, he also struck out 13 batters and picked up a win and a save. He was called up to Denver on September 5th and made his major league debut two days later, pitching one inning of perfect relief in a 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
