Outfielder Jacob Anderson was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 35th pick of the 2011 amateur draft, compensation for the loss of Scott Downs. There were concerns about his signability due to a commitment to Pepperdine University. He was one of five Toronto first-rounders that year, following Tyler Beede and preceding Joe Musgrove, Dwight Smith, Jr. and Kevin Comer.

Anderson signed with the Jays and made his pro debut with the GCL Blue Jays on August 9th, going 0-for-3. Overall, in 9 games with the club that year, he hit .405 with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs.
