Biographical Information[edit]

Jackie Hayes was a Brooklyn boy who played for six different major league teams in seven seasons, mostly at catcher and in center field.

He showed good power on occasion, hitting 4 homers as a rookie (good for second on the team behind Harry Stovey), and 3 homers in 1886 in only 26 games (good for second on the team behind Paul Hines).

The SABR biography of Hugh Daily states that Hayes in 1880 played for an independent team in Baltimore and in 1881 played for an independent team in New York City. Both were competitive teams with some big stars.

During the winter of 1890-91 he played in Cuba.

He is not to be confused with the other Jackie Hayes, who played from 1927-40 as an infielder in the American League.

There have been 18 players (through 2019) remembered with the first name "Jackie", and this one was the first. The second didn't come along till the 1920's, and then the name became most popular in the 1940's and 1950's with players such as Jackie Brandt, Jackie Jensen and, of course, Jackie Robinson.
