Biographical Information[edit]
Jack Manning played 12 seasons in the major leagues from 1873-1886, a long time by standards of the 19th century. He also managed briefly in 1877.
He broke in as a 19-year-old in the National Association in 1873, and in 1874 had a very good year playing mostly with the Baltimore Canaries, hitting .346, good for fourth in the league. Later, after the National League got started, he hit .317 with the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1877, ninth in the league.
He also pitched a lot from 1874 to 1876, going 15-2 in 1875 and 18-5 in 1876. He was second in the league in winning percentage both years, and he also added a number of saves.
Born in Massachusetts, he started his career in Boston, but ended up playing for a variety of teams in three different leagues, finishing up with the 1886 Baltimore Orioles of the American Association.
He worked one National League game as an umpire in 1881.
Notable Achievements[edit]
