Biographical Information[edit]

“Here is a kid who if he could get the bean over the plate would be another Christy Mathewson.” - Frank Sheridan, Portsmouth Daily Times, March 15, 1912

While Jack Bushelman did not end up becoming another Mathewson on the mound, he did become the first Jack Bushelman to toe a big league slab, which is nothing to sneeze at.

Jack pitched one game for his hometown Cincinnati Reds in 1909 and six games (three in each year) for the Boston Red Sox in 1911 and 1912. In total, Jack was 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA. He also pitched a decade in the minor leagues, winning over 100 games. In 1913, he won 26 for Worcester of the New England League. Bushelman was the second major leaguer to come out of the University of Cincinnati; Miller Huggins was the first and later Sandy Koufax would also hail from there.
