Biographical Information[edit]
Jack Burns played 11 games for the Detroit Tigers in 1903 and 4 games for the same team in 1904. He was two years older than teammate Sam Crawford. Jack played exclusively second base, where the regular in 1903 was 31-year-old Heinie Smith and in 1904 it was 38-year-old Bobby Lowe. Neither Smith nor Lowe had a high batting average, and while Jack's .270 batting average in 1903 looked good, he started slowly in 1904 and was finished in the majors. All four of his 1904 games were against the St. Louis Browns, and while he got a hit in his first two appearances, he went 0-for-6 in his last major league game, which was the Tigers' home opener.
He also played 14 seasons in the minors, with the middle of his career spent with teams in San Francisco, CA. He managed three times in the minors, with the last team being the Sanford Celeryfeds, the town not to be confused with Jack's birth city of Salford, United Kingdom.
He came a few decades before another Jack Burns, who also played for the Detroit Tigers. The second Jack Burns was born in Massachusetts.
