Biographical information[edit]

Itsuki Asai played the Gate City Pioneers of the American Pioneer League in 1990 before embarking on a 13-year career as a bench player/pinch hitter with the Hiroshima Carp in Japan.

In high school, he hit 34 home runs. He played in two Koshien Tournaments. With the Pioneers, he hit .253 with two home runs, 21 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 58 games. He also had 26 stolen bases, seven doubles and four triples. He began his career with the Carp in 1993 when they drafted him in the 6th round of 1989 NPB draft, playing in only two games and collecting no hits in two at-bats. He next played in 1995, hitting .303 with six home runs and 16 RBI in 63 games. In 1996, he hit .339 with six home runs and 28 RBI in 103 games (only 124 at-bats). The following year, he hit .234 with one home run and six RBI in 87 games (77 at-bats). In 1998, Asai hit .271 with six home runs and 40 RBI in 277 at-bats, and in 1999 he hit .235 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 96 games.

Asai hit .300 with 13 home runs and 46 RBI - both career highs - in 112 games. The following year, he hit .286 with four home runs and 24 RBI in 107 games. In 2002, he played in 97 games and hit .308 with four home runs and 19 RBI in 146 at-bats, and in 2003 he hit .319 with seven home runs and 32 RBI in 92 games. He played in 79 games in 2004, hitting .284 with three home runs and 21 RBI. In 2005, he hit .265 with no home runs and nine RBI in 80 games and in 43 games in 2006 he hit .176 with no home runs and four RBI.

Overall, Asai hit .285 with 52 home runs and 259 RBI in 1,070 games. He had only 1,832 at-bats.
