Biographical Information[edit]
The son of NPB star Mitsuo Sumi, Ikko Sumi played five seasons in the minor leagues.
Ikko was signed by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2007; the scout was Clay Daniel. He hit .176/.345/.231 in 31 games for the DSL Angels, fielding .992 at catcher and throwing out 36% of attempted base-stealers. With the AZL Angels in 2008, he batted .241/.359/.259 in 22 games. He split 2009 between the Orem Owlz (.232/.328/.268 in 21 G), the Arkansas Travelers (0 for 4) and the Salt Lake Bees (0 for 1). In 2010, he hit .238/.300/.267 in 35 games for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. He played in 2011 for the Inland Empire 66ers (.172/.250/.207 in 13 G) and Arkansas (1 for 6). He finished his US career with a .211/.317/.246 batting line in 126 games, with 35 runs, 34 RBI and one homer. He fielded .986 and gunned down 34% of those who tried to steal. He then played briefly for the Kagawa Olive Guyners of the Shikoku Island League, going 6 for 34 with a homer to end 2011 before hanging up his cleats.
