Biographical Information

"Newt Fisher is by general consent regarded as the best catcher in the Western League." - Sporting Life, Oct. 16, 1897

Ike Fisher played nine games in the majors in 1898 and also had more than a decade in the minors. He managed the Nashville Volunteers from 1901-1905, and he owned most of the team, too.

He is the brother of Bob Fisher. Sporting Life never referred to him as "Ike", that being the name of a trap shooter from Seattle who was sometimes featured in the paper.

It was reported that he had "malarial fever" after the 1897 season.

"No mogul in Dixie since Newt Fisher's day has ever been able to put together two flag-winners in succession. Newt turned the trick his first two seasons, and since that date no manager has ever bagged two Southern banners in a row." - Sporting Life, March 27, 1909
