Biographical Information

Ihosvany Gallegos had two stellar seasons in Cuba yet never made the Cuban national team.

Gallegos had a 0.80 ERA for the Occidentales to lead the 1966-1967 Cuban Serie Nacional; only Orlando Rubio (0.63) had a better ERA in the Cuban Serie Nacional's history to that point. Ihosvany was even better in 1971-1972 at 0.37 with only three earned runs in 72 1/3 innings for the Industriales to win Serie Nacional Most Valuable Pitcher. Since then, the closest any pitcher has come was Omar Carrero's 0.46 in 1975-1976.

Gallegos was 31-25 with a save and a 1.94 ERA in 126 career games in 11 seasons in Cuba, with 21 shutouts in 61 starts. He allowed a .208 average and walked 165 in 534 2/3 IP while fanning 234. Had he qualified, he would have been 6th in Serie Nacional history in career ERA through 2005, between Walfrido Ruiz and Santiago Mederos.

The pitcher has been teaching baseball at the Echeverria Academy since 1960, a role he still held as of 2015. As of 2015, he lived below the stadium with several cats, ducks and parrots. One of his students was Euclides Rojas, who Gallegos taught a slider, screwball and sinker to.
