Biographical Information[edit]
Ian Sommerville Jr. was the third member of his family to be named Chile's best baseball player. His father Ian Sommerville won in 1993 and his brother James Sommerville in 2010 before Ian Jr. took the honor in 2014.
Sommerville played for the Chilean national team in the 2012 South American Championship. He hit .167/.250/.167 with two runs and one RBI for the team in the 2016 South American Championship, when they were managed by his father (his brother was their star player). On the mound, he was 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA, allowing 6 hits and 9 hits in 9 1/3 IP while striking out 7. He took the loss against Colombia. He fielded .944. In the round-robin phase, he tied former AAA player Murilo Gouvea and Pablo Ossandon for 7th in strikeouts.
Starting at third in the 2018 South American Championship (and also playing short), he hit .200/.368/.200 and also pitched one game (3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K against host Argentina). His four walks tied for 4th in the tournament, even with his brother among other players.
