Biographical Information[edit]
Hugh Gilgan played a couple of games for the Brooklyn Atlantics of the National Association in 1875, one at catcher and one in the outfield. He had 2 hits in 8 at-bats.
Gilgan is a newly-found player, his discovery only coming in late 2011. His playing record was originally attributed to Barney Gilligan, a catcher who would make his major league debut in 1879. However, Gilligan was from the Boston, MA area, while the Brooklyn player came from the amateur Flyaway club of Brooklyn, NY. Contemporary accounts identify him as Hugh Gilgan. SABR Researcher Peter Morris tracked him down and found out he became a policeman after his playing days, dying in New York City in 1887.
