Biographical Information[edit]
Howie McFarland was in the majors in July and August of 1945 with the Washington Senators at age 35. He appeared in six games, pinch-hitting in four, and also playing outfield in three games. His only hit was off Thornton Lee of the Chicago White Sox. Wikipedia (03-07-21) states that Howie did not play in the minors or majors in 1938-44, but was signed by the 1945 Senators who were desperate for talent during WWII.
Howie was in the minors for seven seasons. In 1934 he hit .347 for the St. Joseph Saints. Many years later, in 1947, as a player-manager he hit .362 for the Odessa Oilers.
McFarland and his contemporary Harlond Clift are the only two major leaguers born in El Reno, OK (through 2007).
