Biographical Information[edit]

Hisaaki Fukushima caught in Nippon Pro Baseball for 19 years.

Fukushima was signed by the Taiyo Whales in 1966, and he primarily stayed in the NPB Farm League in his first three seasons, only playing 15 games with the big club. He was the third catcher behind Isao Ito and Isao Ohashi in 1970, and he hit .202/.238/.283 in 66 games. However, he was demoted and he only had 104 at-bats combined in the next three seasons. He hit .211/.235/.313 in 65 games in 1974.

The Wakayama native broke out in 1975, hitting .267/.293/.414 with 10 homers and his CS% was an elite .533. Thus, he got the starting spot in 1976. Fukushima crushed a career-high 18 homers with a .266/.296/.449 batting line in 1976, and he was also selected into the 1976 NPB All-Star Game; he was 0-for-1. He then hit .262/.333/.423 in 1977, and he was 2-for-4 in the 1977 NPB All-Star Game. Fukushima was qualified for the batting title the only time in his career in 1978, and his batting line was .249/.318/.434. He hit .245/.307/.424 in 1979, then his batting line was .211/.263/.356 in 1980.

Fukushima attended the 1981 NPB All-Star Game, and he had a 1-for-1 record with a RBI double against Manabu Fujita in Game 3. He ended up hitting .248/.303/.399 in 1981, then he slumped to .197/.229/.359 in 1982. When Yoshiharu Wakana joined the team in 1983, Fukushima lost his spot so he only played 54 and 52 games respectively in the next two seasons. He jumped to the Hiroshima Carp in 1985, and he hit .278/.339/.333 in 45 games for them then he announced his retirement. He coached the Whales from 1987 to 1989.

Overall, Fukushima hit .239/.288/.393 with 702 hits and 107 homers in 19 seasons in NPB.
