Biographical Information

Hines Ward was a high school outfielder taken in the 73rd round of the 1994 amateur draft by the Florida Marlins. He did not sign and went on to college stardom as a multi-talented football player. He then played for the National Football League's Pittsburgh Steelers and became a star wide receiver, winning the 2006 Super Bowl MVP. Shortly thereafter, he was allowed to sit in the dugout to watch the South Korean national team in the semifinals of the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He threw out the first pitch at a Doosan Bears game in a tour of his homeland of South Korea in 2006. Ward came to batting practice for the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 10, 2007, and showed he could still hit, knocking one ball over the fence in left-center and taking a few others into the outfield. Steelers teammate Deshea Townsend only eked out a few grounders in comparison. Ward set Steelers records for career receptions and career receiving yards. In 2011, he won the twelfth season of the TV competition Dancing with the Stars. He retired in 2012 among the NFL career leaders in yards receiving (12,083, 18th), catches (1,000, 8th) and touchdowns receiving (85, 13th).
