Biographical Information

Herschel Bennett, from Missouri, played five seasons for the St. Louis Browns, mostly playing for manager George Sisler. In Herschel's best year, he hit .330 in 41 games in 1924. He also played nine seasons in the minors, including 1921, when he hit .391 in 75 games for the Muskogee Mets and 1922 when he hit .370 with 24 homers in 161 games for the Tulsa Oilers. He made his major league debut in April 1923 but spent most of 1923 back with the Oilers, for whom he hit .336. One source [1] says he crashed into a wall during a game in 1927 and was in a coma. That was the last year of his major league career. Bennett was the first major leaguer out of Drury University, an institution whose alumni also include Roy Smalley and Bill Virdon.

One source [2] says he was elected to county office after his playing days.
