Herman Pitz played in the 1890 American Association for two teams. His minor league career ran from 1887-95. Through 2006, Herman Pitz and Bill Holbert are the only players in Major League history to have had at least 200 at-bats in a season but not collect a single extra base hit. Pitz holds the all-time record for the most career hits (47) by a player with no extra base hits. Virgil Barnes is second, with 40.

Pitz was born in Brooklyn, and played in the majors for Brooklyn, as well as for another New York team, Syracuse. In the minors he played for teams on the East Coast.

He played all over the field in the majors - 61 games at catcher, 16 at third base, 10 in the outfield (all three positions) and small numbers at short and second.

He was not a big fellow - he's listed at 5 ft. 6 in. tall and 140 pounds. The press sometimes referred to him as "little".
