Biographical Information[edit]
Tito Stewart spent nine years in the minors, including three at AAA, but never made the major leagues. He also pitched for one year in Italy.
Debuting with the 1983 Elmira Pioneers, Tito was 6-5 with a 4.03 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 76:16. Promoted to the Winston-Salem Spirits for 1984, he lost his control (62 BB in 142 IP) and fell to 6-13, 4.88. He tied Mark Leiter and three others for the Southern League lead in losses. Cutting his walk rate back down (37 in 147 innings), he rebounded to 10-7, 2.82 for the 1985 Winter Haven Red Sox. The Puerto Rican left-hander was moved to the bullpen in 1986 and had his best season. With the New Britain Red Sox, he was 7-6 with 18 saves and a 1.97 ERA. He tied Logan Easley for the Eastern League lead in saves.
In 1987, Stewart bombed in his AAA debut, going 1-7 with 13 saves and a 5.50 ERA in 52 outings for the Pawtucket Red Sox. He still managed to rank third in the 1987 International League in saves behind Mike Kinnunen and Duane Ward. Demoted back to New Britain in '88, Hector couldn't get back into his groove, with a 1-8, 4.23 record and three saves, a far cry from his summer two years earlier with the same outfit. In 1989, Stewart pitched for Winter Haven (1-3, 6 Sv, 2.35) and New Britain (7-0, Sv, 2.06), re-establishing himself. He formed an excellent 1-2 bullpen punch at New Britain with Daryl Irvine (4-6, 16 Sv, 1.28).
The Ponce native was with New Britain (1-2, Sv, 1.42 in 7 G) and Pawtucket (4-4, 4 Sv, 4.31) in 1990, doing better in his second try at AAA. He was 27 years old at season's end and had pitched eight seasons, so was too long in the tooth to be considered a prospect. He ended his minor league career in 1991 with the San Diego Padres' Wichita Wranglers affiliate (3 R in 8 IP), the Montreal Expos' Indianapolis Indians (3 R in 3 1/3 IP) and the Rieleros de Aguascalientes (8 R in 6 2/3 IP). He pitched in 1992 for Italy's Fiorentina club, going 1-7 with a 5.19 ERA. He did hit a surprising .340/.485/.566 as a DH-1B when not pitching.
In 348 games in the minors, Tito had been 44-55 with 47 saves and a 3.73 ERA.
