Biographical Information[edit]

"LOCKHEAD A SURPRISE. The work of Lockhead at short since his return to the game has been a surprise and delight. He has not only batted the ball for keeps, but has fielded brilliantly, handling the hardest kind of grounders cleverly and getting the sphere over to Tommy Tucker like a shot. He is now a fixture in his position, and is working very smoothly with the rest of the infield." - Sporting Life, May 27, 1899

"Harry Lockhead promises to become a second Hughey Jennings. He covers an immense amount of ground and his throwing to first is never reckless nor headstrong." - Sporting Life, Sept. 9, 1899

Harry Lochhead was the shortstop on the infamous 1899 Cleveland Spiders team that went 20-134. His fielding was decent, but his hitting was below par as he hit only .238 in a league that hit .282.

His name was typically spelled "Lockhead" in Sporting Life.

He died at age 33 at his mother's home from a long-lasting liver complaint, a month after suffering overexposure when he was lost in the desert near Bakersfield, CA.
