Biographical Information[edit]

Harry Fanwell pitched 17 games for the Cleveland Naps in 1910, starting 11 of them. He was 20 years younger than teammate Cy Young.

Harry was an amateur pitcher who drew the attention of Al Buckenberger in 1907 when Al managed the Rochester Bronchos. Harry pitched in the minors in 1908 for the Utica Pent-Ups, and then in 1909 he pitched for Hagerstown and (when the season ended) for Mount Airy.

He was present with the Naps during spring training in 1911, and hurt teammate Joe Jackson on the ankle with a pitch. [1] Harry pitched in the minors that year and in 1912. The 1911 Naps were going to send Harry to New Orleans, but the Portland Beavers wanted him. After seeing him pitch in a few games, however, they returned him to the Naps, who planned to send him to New Orleans. [2]

"In the Danville-Roanoke 2-0 game of June 6 pitcher Harry Fanwell, for Danville, struck out 11 men, allowed but five hits and made two hits himself." - from Sporting Life, June 18, 1910, about a performance by Fanwell in the month before he made his major league debut
