". . . catcher Harry Barton (was) the most popular player ever to wear a Wilmington uniform." - from an article about Delaware independent baseball in 1902
Harry Barton played briefly for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1905, but had already achieved his fame with the independent Wilmington team. Harry started his pro career in 1895 and finished in 1911. He also managed in 1910 and 1911. Harry was mostly a catcher, but played other positions on occasion as well. He was 30 by the time he came to the majors, playing under manager Connie Mack, who had been a catcher himself. The 1905 Athletics won the pennant that year with a record of 92-56.
