Biographical Information[edit]

Harold McClure played a couple games with the 1882 Boston Red Stockings but was more famous for his minor league career. After baseball he became a lawyer, and served as a judge for many years.

"Harold McClure, who will be remembered as Ward's first catcher, was recently married. He is a prosperous young lawyer at Sunbury, Pa. He left the profession . . . to study law." - Sporting Life, June 21, 1890, about Harold McClure and Monte Ward's days with the Philadelphia team when they were both 17

Hal's friend John Ward also eventually left the game in order to become a lawyer.

The Commemorative Biographical Record of Central Pennsylvania (1898) has a biography of Judge McClure that says he earned both a bachelor's degree in 1877 and a master's degree in 1880. He was admitted to the bar in 1881 and began practice immediately. His ability as a catcher allowed him to earn an income while he studied the law.

The Snyder County Annals (1919) has his obituary. He was a judge from 1891-1911. He also invested in companies later in life, becoming particularly interested in utilities. Governor Tener was a good friend.
