Héctor Olivera Sr.
Héctor Olivera González
- Bats Right, Throws Right
Héctor Olivera had a fine career in Cuban baseball before his son Héctor Olivera Jr. followed in his footsteps. Olivera tied for the 1975-1976 Serie Nacional lead with four triples. He won the 1980 Selective Series batting title at .459. It was the first time a Cuban league player ever topped .400 and remains the all-time record for a Cuban season.
Olivera made a few appearances with the Cuban national team. The third baseman hit .346 in the 1980 Amateur World Series (won by Cuba) and .314 in the 1981 Intercontinental Cup (Cuba won Silver; the US won Gold). His son would also be on the national team.
Overall, Olivera hit .316/.397/.464 in Cuban leagues and fielded .988.
