Biographical Information

"G. I. Tutwiler, a second baseman from the Hattiesburg team, in the Cotton States League, reported to Manager Jennings last week. Tutwiler is a rangy fellow, about the size of Drake, and in actions he somewhat resembles "Paddy" Bauman (sic), present second baseman of the Tigers." - Sporting Life, September 2, 1911

Guy "King Tut" Tutwiler was up twice with the Detroit Tigers in 1911 and 1913, playing 13 games the first time and 14 the next. He played second base and left field the first time, and first base the second time.

Guy and Ed Sherling are, through 2019, the only two major leaguers born in Coalburg, AL. Guy played for the Hattiesburg Woodpeckers in 1910 and 1911 before coming to the majors. In 1911 he led the team in home runs and triples, along with hitting .330. He also played for the minor league Providence Grays for six seasons and the Mobile Bears for three seasons.

This site [1] points out that the Egyptian King Tut's tomb was not discovered until 1922, long after Tutwiler played in the majors, so he probably wasn't called that until nearly the end of his minor league career.
