Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Griffin Roberts was the final player drafted in the first round of the 2018 amateur draft, being selected with the #43 pick in Competitive Balance Round A by the St. Louis Cardinals. He had been at Wake Forest University for three years, the first two as a reliever and the final one as a starter. His first year, as a walk-on, was pretty bad, with an ERA of 9.19 in 18 games and walking over a batter per inning, but he improved significantly over the next two seasons. He was picked in the 29th round of the 2017 amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins, after going 2-5, 2.19 with 8 saves as a reliever, then in 2018 was 5-4, 3.82 in 14 starts, with 130 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings. He also had a very successful season in the Cape Cod League following the 2017 college season, with an ERA of 1.97 in 32 innings.

He began his professional career in 2018 with the GCL Cardinals and also played one game with the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League. Between the two, he was 0-1, 5.59 in 8 games, logging just 9 2/3 innings after a busy season in college. In 2019, he had a rough year with Palm Beach, going 1-7, 6.44 in 15 games (13 starts). His strikeout rate plummeted, to just 36 in 65 2/3 innings, against 35 walks. He pitched in the Arizona Fall League after the season and did much better, with an ERA of 3.07 and 18 Ks and 2 walks in 14 2/3 innings. He then was forced into inactivity in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the minor league season.
