Biographical Information

Greg McCarthy was drafted and signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1987. He played four seasons for them in single-A. In December 1990, he was picked by the Montreal Expos in the 1990 Rule V Draft, but missed the entire 1991 season after an arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder. In December 1991, he was acquired by the Cleveland Indians and played three seasons in their farm system.

In 1995, McCarthy played double-A in the Chicago White Sox organization, before signing with the Seattle Mariners. After starting the 1996 season in triple-A, he made his Major League debut with Seattle on August 28. He pitched part of three seasons (1996-1998) in the Majors, appearing in 76 games.

Playing the the Extraliga.

In 1999 and 2000, McCarthy played on triple-A teams for the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers. Following this, McCarthy pitched for teams in Independent Leagues and also spent some time with the Hoofddorp Pioniers in the Dutch Major Leagues. McCarthy also coached in the Netherlands. In 2009, he became head coach of the Mosquito Athletics Attnang-Puchheim of the Austrian Baseball League. He was fired after just six games, with a 4-2 record.

McCarthy then signed on with Draci Brno of the Czech Extraliga, perhaps the first former major league ever in the circuit; Roger Deago had played in the league prior to his big league career. He had no decisions and allowed four runs in 6 1/3 IP, striking out 9 in 2009. He remained active with Czech baseball, coaching for the Czech national team for the 2009 Baseball World Cup and 2010 European Championship. He was with Draci Brno from 2009-2011, working as pitching coach as well as player.
