Biographical Information[edit]

Greg Brown has been an announcer.

Brown worked in the Pittsburgh Pirates front office for 10 years. He was a sports anchor for a Youngstown, OH TV station then was an announcer for the Buffalo Bisons from 1989-1993; he also was an announcer for the NFL's Buffalo Bills at this time. In 1994, he rejoined the Pirates, now as a play-by-play announcer, succeeding Jim Rooker. As of 2013, he was 4th in Pirates history in years spent as an announcer. He started the call "Raise the Jolly Roger" after Pirates victories; when the 2013 Pirates broke the team's long run of losing seasons, many fans began buying Jolly Roger Pirate flags as an emblem of their support for the team. In a 2016 game, he drew a visit to the booth from Tony La Russa, who was angered at Brown's characterization of La Russa's teams using retaliatory pitches as a manager.
