Biographical Information

Greg Beals played 3 minor league seasons then became a college coach.

Beals hit .306 in three seasons at Kent State, then was taken by the New York Mets in the 21st round of the 1991 amateur draft (as per the 1992 Baseball Almanac; his Ball State bio has him being picked in the 22nd round). Greg made his professional debut that year with the Pittsfield Mets, hitting only .212/~.333/.265 while backing up Tony Tijerina at catcher; both went on to leadership roles as Tijerina would later be a minor league manager while Beals coached in college.

Greg split 1992 between the Columbia Mets (.285/.399/.330 in 64 G) and the St. Lucie Mets (7 for 32, 8 BB, 3 2B). Beals went 14 for 60 with 9 walks, 2 doubles, a triple and a homer for St. Lucie in '93, backing up Alberto Castillo.

Returning to college, Beals finished his degree. He was an assistant coach for 9 seasons at his alma mater, Kent State. He became head coach at Ball State University in August 2002. He went 214-173 in his first 7 seasons there. In 2006, he helped Ball State win the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time ever. In 2011, Beals became the head coach at Ohio State University. He was fired by Ohio State after the 2022 season. He was hired by University of Akron, but left after fall practice to be head coach at Marshall University.
