Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Grant Lavigne was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the Competitive Balance Round A of the 2018 amateur draft, with the 42nd overall pick, out of a high school in New Hampshire. The northeastern state is not known as a baseball hotbed and in fact no position player from the state had reached the majors in the draft era. He was named his state's top high school baseball player as both a junior and senior. He also played hockey, where he was a defenceman given his size.

He began his professional career in 2018 with the Grand Junction Rockies in the Pioneer League and did very well, with a batting line of .350/.477/.519 in 59 games, with 45 runs and 38 RBIs. He was moved up to the South Atlantic League in 2019, playing for the Asheville Tourists, but found the step a bit high as he fell to .236/.347/.327 in 126 games. He did hit 19 doubles and 7 homers and drove in 64 runs, although his base stealing was pretty bad, with 8 steals in 17 attempts. He was 2.5 years younger than the average player in the league and held on to a regular job, so it was not all a loss. However, he was then forced into idleness by the shutdown of the minor leagues in 2020, caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

His last name is typically French Canadian, not surprising given the large percentage of New Hampshire's population that is of French Canadian origin.
