Biographical Information[edit]
Grady "Butcher Boy" Adkins pitched quite a lot during his two seasons in the majors. With the Chicago White Sox in 1928 he appeared in 36 games, primarily as a starter, and went 10-16. With the same team in 1929 he was in 31 games, half of which he started, and had a record of 2-11. Remarkably, his .391 slugging percentage taking his cuts was higher than the team's (.363). Baseball Digest of December 1957 had a story about how Adkins asked teammate Moe Berg if the Yankees were a tough team. Berg said to pitch them like any other team, and when the Yanks got a bunch of hits off Adkins, Adkins told Berg he would never believe another word Berg said. A couple of Yankee icons, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, hit home runs in the same game off numerous pitchers and Adkins, on June 12, 1928.
Adkins pitched at least 11 seasons in the minors, winning 21 games for the Henryetta Hens in 1920 and 26 the next year with the same team. In 1926 with the Shreveport Sports, he won 19. He player/managed the Vicksburg Hill Billies in 1924.
