Biographical Information[edit]
Gordie Hershiser is the younger brother of All-Star pitcher Orel Hershiser. He was drafted four times without signing. He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 27th round of the 1982 amateur draft, three years and 10 rounds after the Dodgers took his brother. While in junior college, he was selected by the Detroit Tigers (2nd round, January secondary draft, 1983), St. Louis Cardinals (4th round, January 1984) Montréal Expos (1st round, June 1984 secondary draft).
He began his professional career in 1987 in the Los Angeles Dodgers system, the year before his brother peaked for LA. With the 1987 Vero Beach Dodgers, Gordie was just 1-6 with a save despite a 3.23 ERA. He split 1988 between the GCL Dodgers (1-1, 3 R in 8 1/3 IP) and Salem Dodgers (7-0, 2.35, .98 WHIP). Had he qualified, he would have ranked 5th in the Northwest League in ERA. He also tied for 5th in the NWL in wins. The Hershiser brothers managed a combined 30-8 record for the 1988 regular season.
In 1989, Gordie was 0-3 with six saves and a 3.86 ERA for the AA San Antonio Dodgers, now pitching primarily in relief. He allowed one run in eight innings for San Antonio in 1990 to end his career. Overall, he went 9-10 with a 3.04 ERA in 71 games, 24 starts.
He later became a TV sportscaster.
