Biographical Information[edit]

Gonzalo Lopez pitched several years in the minor leagues. He was signed by scout Rene Francisco for the Atlanta Braves in 2000 at age 16. He debuted as a pro in 2001, going 5-4 with a 2.45 ERA and .92 WHIP for the GCL Braves while fanning 69 in 58 2/3 IP. He was two strikeouts shy of the Gulf Coast League lead. Baseball America rated him as the #9 prospect in the GCL.

In 2002, the southpaw was 7-10 with a 3.10 ERA for the Macon Braves, allowing 134 hits in 157 innings. The next season, Lopez was 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in 3 games for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, presumably battling injuries. In 2004, he was 8-5 with a 3.67 ERA for the Rome Braves with 109 K in 100 2/3 IP.

Lopez missed 2005 due to injury and only pitched 4 games for Myrtle Beach in 2006, then skipped 2007 with injury. Back for 16 games in 2008, he struggled, going 2-3 with a 6.32 ERA for the Pelicans.
