Biographical Information[edit]
George Yantz is the proud possessor of a batting average of 1.000. He played in one major league game, on September 30, 1912, and got one hit in one try. Suiting up for the Chicago Cubs, he replaced catcher Jimmy Archer in the field, playing two innings. The game was against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and George's hit was off Claude Hendrix, who won the game to bring his record to 24-9, leading the National League in winning percentage.
George also played a decade in the minors. He moved around a lot, but was with the Birmingham Barons for two seasons.
Yantz was born, and died, in Louisville, KY. Another Kentucky-born player, Bobby Veach, made his major league debut in the same month that Yantz did.
