Biographical Information[edit]
George Wright played five years in the big leagues, mostly for the Texas Rangers. In his most notable year, he hit 18 home runs with a .276 average for the Texas Rangers in 1983.
Wright was born in Oklahoma City, OK and also attended high school there. He was a fourth round pick in the 1977 amateur draft and started in the rookie league that year.
An outfielder, George worked his way up to system, going from the Asheville Tourists in 1978 and 1979 to the Tulsa Drillers in 1980-1981.
In 1982 he became a regular at the major league level, playing center field for the Rangers and hitting .264 with 11 home runs. He was the youngest regular on the team.
After his 1983 season, in which he appeared in 162 games, he was in 101 games in 1984, hitting .243 with 9 home runs. The following year, 1985, he played 109 games with a .190 average.
In his last major league season, 1986, he was traded in mid-season to the Montreal Expos and hit .202 between the two teams.
Beginning in 1984, Wright had played some games each year in the minors, and after his major league days he played in the minors in 1987 and 1989-1891. He played in Japan in 1988 and 1993. He also played in Mexico.
