Biographical Information

Catcher George Mitterwald spent all of his career with the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs, playing 11 seasons. On April 17, 1974, in only his fifth game as a member of the Cubs, he had the best day of his career in leading the Cubbies to an 18-9 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates; he went 4 for 4 with a walk, a double and three homers, driving in 8 runs. He would be the last Cubs catcher to have a three-homer game until Dioner Navarro on May 29, 2013.

Mitterwald was the Oakland A's bullpen coach from 1979 to 1982 and also coached one season, 1988, for the New York Yankees. He had three different stints as a minor league manager, with the Modesto A's (1983-1985), the Orlando Twins (1986-1987), and the independent Duluth-Superior Dukes (1996-1998).
