Biographical Information[edit]

After graduating from Northwestern University in 1940, infielder George McKinnon played one year of minor league baseball in the Chicago Cubs organization, splitting the 1941 season between the Zanesville Cubs and the Winnipeg Maroons and hitting .203 between the two clubs. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy for four years. While in the Navy, he was initially reported as lost at sea following the sinking of the USS Lexington.

After the war, McKinnon was head baseball coach at Fenn College (now Cleveland State University) from 1947 to 1949 and coached at Cleveland Heights High School for more than a decade. From 1962 to 1981, he was head coach at his alma mater, Northwestern, leading the school to a 304-391-6 record during that span. Under his leadership, the Wildcats won 20 games five times, with their best season coming in 1973, when they went 28-12.
