Biographical Information[edit]
George Bird played center field for the 1871 Rockford Forest Citys as a teammate of Cap Anson. He was two years older than the future Hall of Famer. Rockford did not field a team in 1872, and Bird did not play further in the National Association. Teammates Anson and Bob Addy moved over to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1872. Bird lived to be 90 years old and was the last survivor from the 1871 season. He is one of six major leaguers whose last name was Bird (through 2019).
