Biographical Information

New jersey native George Armstrong spent nine seasons in professional baseball from 1943 to 1951.

The stocky catcher had a strong season with the Lancaster Red Roses of the Class B Interstate League in 1945, appearing in 102 games and hitting .288 with seven home runs. This showing earned him his first and only stint in the major leagues, debuting with the Philadelphia Athletics on April 26, 1946. George appeared in eight games, picked up one hit in six at-bats (.167), making his last appearance on June 23, 1946. George spent five more years in the minors (1947-1951) with his best showing coming with the 1949 Sunbury Reds of the Class B Interstate League. He hit .298 with five homers in 114 games. He finished up his career, at 27, with the 1951 York White Roses, again in the Interstate League, hitting .311 but appearing in only 12 games. Armstrong appeared in 640 games during his nine year minor league run, hitting .272 with 25 home runs.

After his baseball career, Armstrong was a firefighter for the East Orange, NJ fire department for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He died on July 24, 1993 at the East Orange Memorial Hospital.
