Biographical Information[edit]

Gene Steinbrenner was a second basemen who had a noteworthy three-game major league career. He debuted as a 19-year-old for the Philadelphia Phillies on April 25, 1912 filling in for an ill Otto Knabe. Despite the Phillies taking a 3-1 loss to the New York Giants Steinbrenner played well: batting leadoff, he went 2 for 4 with a double and the lone RBI against the great Christy Mathewson. He returned to the lineup the next day against the Brooklyn Dodgers but this time his line was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and an error in the field. Steinbrenner subbed into one more game during May and his time in the bigs was done.

Steinbrenner played seven seasons in the minors after his National League stint. The majority of his minor league time was with various teams in the Virginia League.
