Biographical Information[edit]
Lefty pitcher Gene Snyder was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1950. He spent most of the 1950s in the minors struggling with his control. It led to seasons such as his 1951 campaign with the Salina Blue Jays of the Western Association - going 17-10 over 213 IP but yielding 225 walks in the process. Eventually Snyder was traded in December of 1958 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was with the Dodgers in 1959 that he played his only season in the majors, pitching in 11 games with a record of 1-1 with an ERA of 5.47. In his 26 2/3 innings, he had 7 wild pitches to go along with 20 walks. Snyder did not appear in the 1959 World Series, which the Dodgers won.
In 1956 spring training, Phillies coach Benny Bengough commented that he was impressed by Snyder's downer: "His downer really falls".
