Biographical Information[edit]
Gene Hasson came to the majors at a young age and was an above-average hitter for both his major league seasons.
He played for the Williamsport Grays in 1936-37. He was with Montreal in 1939-40. In all, he had 13 seasons in the minors with approximately 175 minor league home runs.
Gene lost some of his best years to the war - he was in the military during ages 27-29. During World War II, Hasson was the manager and first baseman for a service team at Fort Lee, Virginia that won a service championship. Several major leaguers were on the team, including Pete Reiser. In 1946 and 1947 he managed the Portsmouth Cubs. In 1948 he won the Triple Crown while player-manager at Pittsfield in the Canadian-American League.
A Wikipedia article claims he hit a home run in his first major league at-bat.
He served in the U.S. Army.
