Biographical Information[edit]
Gary Weiss had a brief but successful pro career, culminating in two partial years in the majors.
He was picked in the 19th round of the 1978 Amateur Draft out of the University of Houston by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He started with the A level Clinton Dodgers in 1978, hitting .281 with a .380 OBP albeit without much power. In 1979 he was with the San Antonio Dodgers, hitting .321, putting up an OBP of .418, and hitting 8 homers with 27 doubles. He also stole 28 bases.
His 1980 year was mostly with the Albuquerque Dukes, hitting .291 with a .411 OBP. He then came up to be in eight games with the major league Dodgers at the end of the season. He had no plate appearances but pinch-ran eight times.
1981 found him back in Albuquerque, where he stole 30 bases, hit .294 and had a .388 OBP. This time he came to the Dodgers to play 13 games in the field, and was able to come to the plate 21 times in 14 games. He also pinch-ran four times. His appearance on October 4, 1981, the last game of the regular season, was apparently his last pro game. The Dodgers went on to win the 1981 World Series, but he was not on the postseason roster.
Since 1982, Gary has worked in insurance. His son, Erich Weiss, was selected in the 2013 amateur draft.
