Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Garabez Rosa began his professional career in 2007 at 17 years old. He was signed by Baltimore Orioles scout Carlos Bernhardt on November 2, 2006.
In just his second professional campaign, he batted .322/.336/.449 with 66 hits in 55 games between the GCL Orioles and Aberdeen IronBirds. He slumped to .206/.249/.369 the next year and did not hit for any high averages in the succeeding campaigns. In 2010, he was a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star, hitting 32 doubles for the Delmarva Shorebirds and in 2014, he again made the Mid-Season All-Star team (Eastern League), whacking 11 dingers for the Bowie Baysox. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 2015.
Of particular note is Rosa's inability to draw walks. He had 200 at-bats in 2007 and had only three BBs; in 2008, he had 205 at-bats and again drew only three walks. In 2009, he had nine walks in 252 at-bats and in 2010, he walked only seven times in 459 at-bats (while striking out 174 times). In 423 at-bats in 2011, Rosa had nine walks and 104 Ks; in 2012, he had 10 walks and 87 strikeouts in 363 at-bats; in 2013, he had eight walks and 77 Ks in 460 at-bats and in 2014, he had 12 walks and 95 strikeouts in 465 at-bats. Through his first eight seasons, he averaged one walk every 46 at-bats (and every 49 plate appearances).
He blossomed in 2017, winning Eastern League Player of the Year, hitting .310/.333/.444 with 14 homers and 91 RBI while playing six different positions. He led the league in average and RBI. In the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier, he was named MVP, drilling five homers as the Dominicans went 4-1 to take the title. His 3-run homer in the 10th off Dustin Molleken gave the Dominican national team a win over Pan American Games defending champion Canada. He joined Willy García and Sneider Batista as the tourney's All-Star outfielders.
