Biographical Information[edit]

After playing first base and pitching at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, Gabriel Hughes was a first-round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the 2022 amateur draft, #10 overall. He began his pro career on September 10th that year, pitching one game for the class A Fresno Grizzlies. He started, went 3 innings, allowed a hit, a walk, and recorded a strikeout.

The Rockies advanced him to class A+ for the 2023 season, meaning that he would once again play in Spokane less than a year removed from the completion of his college career. He started the Spokane Indians' first game of 2023 on April 11th and received a nice ovation from the crowd. This was supposed to be the fourth game of the Indians' season, but the scheduled opening three-game series in Vancouver, BC the previous weekend had been rained out. On June 7, after 8 starts, he was moved up another level to AA. His first start with the Hartford Yard Goats was that same day and he went 5 innings, allowed 3 runs (all earned) on 5 hits & 3 walks. His Yard Goats beat the Somerset Patriots 5-4 in Dunkin' Park.
