Biographical Information[edit]

Fumio Maruyama pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.

Maruyama was signed by the Osaka Tigers in 1943, and he was 7-21 with a 2.20 ERA in his rookie year. He was 2nd in the losses (2 behind Takehiko Bessho), 3rd in walks (36 behind Bessho) and 8th in strikeouts (between Kozo Naito and Yasuo Hayashi) in the JPBL. Maruyama only pitched one game in 1944, then he was enlisted into the military and missed two seasons. He returned in 1946 and he had his career year. Maruyama had a 25-15 record with a 3.09 ERA, ranking 2nd in wins (5 behind Giichiro Shiraki), 4th in appearances (between Naito and Hirokazu Nozaki), 4th in walks (between Bessho and Shiraki) and 2nd in walks (3 behind Juzo Sanada).

The Osaka native still faced serious control problems in 1947, and he was 10-14 with a 3.31 ERA while walking 137 in 239 innings. He led the league with 5 wild pitches, and he was 4th in walks (between Shigeaki Kuroo and Bessho). Maruyama was 0-5 with a 4.42 ERA in 1948, then he jumped to the Chunichi Dragons. He was 3-4 with a 3.36 ERA in 1949, but he struggled again in 1950 as he allowed 14 runs in 7 innings. The Dragons released him, and he signed with the Taiyo Whales. However, Murayama only pitched 4 games for them in 1951, then he announced his retirement.

Overall, Maruyama was 45-62 with a 3.18 ERA, struck out 385 and pitched 985 innings in 8 years in NPB. As of 2023, he was 91st in walks in NPB, between Senichi Hoshino and Shinji Sasaoka.
